Campaign - Incorrect Engine Oil Level Reading: Overview

SUBJECT INCORRECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL READING NUMBER: 86-C-10

DATE: Nov. 10, 1986

MODELS/YEARS 1986 DELTA 88 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L SECTION: 6A
(VIN CODE 3) ENGINE
CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some 1986 Delta 88 models equipped with a 3.8L V-6 engine may have been assembled with an engine oil dipstick which will give an incorrect oil level reading. The engines in these vehicles were properly filled with oil at the time of manufacture. If the oil level is checked and then adjusted to the incorrect dipstick reading, an overfill of approximately two (2) quarts would result.. This overfill may cause aeration of the oil resulting in loss of oil pressure, possible noise, and poor engine performance.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1986 Delta 88 models equipped with a 3.8L LG3 (VIN Code 3) engine within the following VIN breakpoints:

DEALER ACTION

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on vehicles involved, the original engine oil dipstick is to be replaced with a new correct reading dipstick, part number 25522307. Dipsticks can be identified by the part number which is stamped on the dipstick blade.

Since dipsticks can be installed very easily, and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, the new dipsticks have been furnished directly to affected owners of record. Owners may install them personally or they may request dealer assistance for installation.

If requested, dealers are to perform this recall campaign on affected vehicles at no charge to the owner regardless of time, mileage or ownership. In addition, dealers are to correct all affected vehicles in dealer new and used car inventory prior to their sale.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling the vehicle.
